I don't share his father's sentiment and I'd warn him against complacency.
The English have a long history of turning against those they live amongst. The Americans have a short history of it.
It's fewer than 80 years since Europe turned on those who were slightly different and blamed them for troubles because it was easier than taking responsibility for their own actions.
It's fewer than 40 years since Love Thy Neighbour ended its seven series run on British television.
